TOP 3 TIPS TO GET EPIC CONFETTI PHOTOS

How to get the best confetti photos

If trying to get the perfect confetti shot is important, then this blog post is for you! There’s a few things that we can do to maximise your chances of some epic confetti photos – put the planning in and then enjoy the chaos of those big reactions, beautiful colour and movement and your guests cheering and laughing like they mean business!

I’m Charlotte, a wedding photographer in Essex and my style of photography is all about authentic moments with a dash of direction for those key moments that call for them. I’ve photographed confetti in every kind of light, weather and all during all parts of a wedding day and with some pre-planning, you’ll be able to enjoy the chaos of the moment and let me capture it all for you.

Fast & easy answer on how to get the best confetti photos

Choose the big, floaty, biodegradable, paper circles. Hand it out to your guests from baskets, not cones or bags. I’ll line up your guests into a confetti tunnel and request that they throw ‘up, not at’ while you two walk slowly through together. These 3 tips will ensure you are maximising your chances of some epic, wall worthy confetti shots.

Your quick confetti plan to make sure your photos WOW!

Your confetti tunnel will be over in seconds so follow this simple plan to maximise the result and have a great time while it’s happening.

  • Check your venue’s rules. Before you buy your confetti, ask your venue what they’ll allow you to throw. Some venues will only allow biodegradable, some may prefer you to use petals, and many will only allow you to throw confetti in certain areas (so remember to check for the wet weather alternative too!)
  • Use baskets to distribute your confetti. Save your money (and the environment!) and don’t buy individual cones or bags for your confetti. I’ll have to tell your guests to tip out the contents into their hands – if confetti is thrown direct from a cone or bag, it comes out in big clumps – not the look we’re going for. There’s also always someone who’ll throw the whole cone/bag right at you! What we’re going for is big handfuls for a fuller look.
  • I’ll get your guests into a tunnel formation. I’ll line up your guests facing each other with a clear walkway in between. The longer your tunnel, the more photos you’ll get.
  • I’ll instruct your guests to throw the confetti up, not at you. This does two things, it keeps the confetti in the air longer, and hopefully you’ll be smiling instead of scrunching up your face to avoid eye-poking!
  • Walk the tunnel slowly, stay close together, side by side if possible. Keep your chins up, smile, walk slowly so you can take it all in. You can even stop halfway for a quick kiss if you want to you – your guests will love it and you’ll get that wall worthy photo!

How much confetti will we need?

For biodegradable paper confetti, aim for 1-2 handfuls per guest. Or for petals, you’re looking at 1 litre per 10 guests.

TOP TIP – YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH CONFETTI!

Lets talk confetti types (Paper vs Dried flowers vs Fresh petals)

Okay, so the two main things you need to think about are visibility of the confetti (does it show up well in camera) and, float ability (how long will it hang in the air for those impactful photos).

Paper confetti – biodegradable paper circles

You’ve spoken to your venue and they allow you to use this type of confetti (yay!). This is the number one option to get those impactful, floaty, WOW confetti photos. They’re big and bright and the camera loves them and they’re so light that they hang around in the air the longest out of all the confetti options.

This is best for: Long confetti tunnels with all your guests, colour impact, maximum WOW factor

Dried flower confetti

Of course dried flower confetti can look lovely and many venues prefer this option, but the tiny petals can disappear on camera, especially if you’re considering the darker coloured confetti. It’s heavier than paper and so doesn’t float around in the air for anywhere near as long. If you are opting for this type of confetti, try and find larger petals and lighter colours.

This is best for: Venues with eco friendly rules.

Fresh petal confetti

Fresh petals are so romantic and show up so well on camera. They are quite heavy though and so the moment can be over faster than paper confetti. If you are opting for this type of confetti, make sure you have plenty for maximum impact!

This is best for: Venues that only allow petals and those romantic vibes.

Alternative options to confetti?

Bubbles are a good alternative with no mess afterwards. Bubbles tend to work best against a dark background so they are visible in the photos – if you’re having a barn wedding, the dark wood is the perfect example of how bubbles can work. Again though, you do need a lot to make it impactful. You could opt for, or add confetti canons or if it’s really not your thing, swop it for a sparkler exit or skip it completely – it’s your day after all!

How to get the best confetti photos – my verdict as a wedding photographer in Essex

For the most impactful confetti photos, my favourite type of confetti has to be the big, round, brightly coloured, biodegradable paper confetti. They show up beautifully on camera, stay in floating around in the air after they’re thrown and you can choose colours to match your palette.

Flutter Darlings is always my recommendation on where to get this kind of confetti – they sell it by the handful and in SO many colours too!

The real secret to how to get the best confetti photos is quantity – there’s no such thing as too much confetti. To get those WOW confetti shots, you’ll need at least 1-2 handfuls per guest, and distribute it in baskets, not cones or bags. Remember to check with your venue about what their preferences are and decide on when you’d like to do your confetti shot – again, your venue may have a preference on this, and also on the location!
