Friern Manor Wedding Photographer. A Rainy Autumn Wedding in Essex
If you’re looking for a Friern Manor wedding photographer who will capture your wedding naturally, without turning the day into a photoshoot, this autumn wedding is a perfect example of why I love documentary wedding photography. Del and Sarah got in touch to see if I was available after I documented their friends wedding where Del was Best Man. I have to say this is how I get a lot of my clients, through meeting them at other weddings, or referrals and it’s such a lovely compliment!
The weather certainly had it’s own ideas for Sarah & Del. There was heavy rain, umbrellas, very wet gardens… and then, just when we needed it, the clouds parted, the sun appeared and we were treated to a beautiful rainbow.
And honestly? It made the photographs even better.
As an Essex documentary wedding photographer, I love couples who aren’t afraid to embrace whatever the day brings. You don’t need sunshine from morning until evening to have an amazing wedding day – and you certainly don’t need to spend hours taking photographs to end up with a beautiful wedding gallery.
This was also a short coverage wedding, proving that you don’t have to book your photographer for ten or twelve hours to capture the important parts of your day, whatever your priorities are, I’ve got you!
A Rainy Autumn Wedding at Friern Manor
Friern Manor is a beautiful wedding venue in Essex, with an elegant country-house feel, lovely grounds and plenty of options for photographs whatever the weather decides to do.
And on this particular autumn day, we definitely needed the wet-weather plan.
Heavy rain came down throughout the early part of the celebrations, but rather than letting it dictate the day, we simply worked around it.
That’s one of the things I love about documentary wedding photography. I’m not working from a rigid list of photographs that has to happen at a particular time.
Instead, I’m watching what’s happening and looking for opportunities.
When the rain eased enough for us to venture outside, we grabbed the umbrellas and headed into the gardens.
Yes, We Went Outside in the Rain!
If there’s one thing I would encourage couples to do on a rainy wedding day, it’s not to automatically rule out going outside.
Rain can create incredibly atmospheric wedding photographs.
The reflections, dramatic skies, movement of the umbrellas and the intimacy of being tucked underneath one together can create photographs that feel completely different from the usual sunny wedding portraits.
So we embraced it.
The couple ventured outside with their umbrellas, and rather than spending ages posing, we kept things relaxed and natural.
A few minutes was all we needed.
Then, as if the weather had decided we’d earned it, a rainbow appeared.
You really couldn’t have planned it better.
The Sun Came Out for Confetti
And then came the best bit.
The clouds began to clear and the sun finally appeared just in time for the confetti.
The gardens at Friern Manor were suddenly bathed in beautiful autumn light, guests were able to head outside, and the atmosphere completely changed.
There was time for everyone to mingle, enjoy a drink and catch up with friends and family before heading back inside for the speeches.
These are exactly the moments I love documenting.
Not just the big things, but the in-between moments that make a wedding feel like your wedding.
Why Friern Manor Works So Well for Wedding Photography
One of the reasons I would love to photograph more weddings at Friern Manor is the variety the venue offers.
The elegant surroundings provide a beautiful backdrop for wedding portraits, while the gardens give couples somewhere to escape for a few minutes during the drinks reception.
And, importantly, it works even when the weather isn’t playing ball.
A good wedding photographer should always have a plan B.
Actually, I’d say they should have plans A, B, C and D.
Because British weather is going to do whatever it wants!
At Friern Manor, there are opportunities for photographs indoors as well as outside, meaning a rainy forecast doesn’t mean sacrificing your portraits.
Short Wedding Photography Coverage at Friern Manor
This wedding was photographed with shorter coverage, which is something I offer to couples who don’t necessarily want or need photography from getting ready in the morning through to the dancing late at night.
Perhaps you’re having:
- A weekday wedding
- A smaller or more intimate celebration
- A registry office or civil ceremony
- A shorter wedding reception
- A wedding where the main celebrations happen over a few hours
- Or you simply don’t want a photographer all day
That’s completely fine.
My Just for You photography option allows couples to build their wedding photography coverage around what actually matters to them.
You might want me there for the ceremony, group photographs, portraits and drinks reception.
Or perhaps you want a few hours covering the ceremony, confetti, family and friends and some relaxed portraits before heading off to enjoy the rest of the day privately.
You shouldn’t have to pay for hours of photography you don’t actually want.
A Documentary Wedding Photographer for Couples Who Don’t Like Photos
If you’re the kind of person who feels slightly uncomfortable at the thought of having a photographer follow you around all day, I completely understand.
In fact, camera-shy couples are my ideal clients.
My approach is relaxed and unobtrusive. I’m not going to constantly stop you and tell you where to stand, how to hold your hands or how to smile.
I’ll give you some gentle direction when it’s useful, particularly for portraits and group photographs, but most of the time I’m simply observing what’s happening around you. Check out this blog post where I chat about my approach.
The result is a collection of photographs that feels like your wedding rather than a styled photoshoot.
And if you’re worried about being awkward in photographs, please know that you really don’t need to know what you’re doing.
That’s my job.
Your Wedding Doesn’t Need Perfect Weather
If there’s one thing I’d take away from this Friern Manor wedding, it’s this:
Don’t let the weather scare you.
The heavy rain gave us atmospheric photographs under umbrellas.
The break in the weather gave us a rainbow.
The sunshine gave us gorgeous photographs during confetti and drinks in the gardens.
None of it was planned.
And that’s precisely why I love documentary wedding photography.
The unexpected moments are often the ones you’ll remember most.
