What if We Hate Having Our Photo Taken? A Guide for Camera-Shy Couples Planning Their Wedding

If the thought of being photographed all day makes you feel a bit anxious, you’re not alone.

One of the first things couples say when they enquire with me is:

“We’re really awkward in front of the camera.”

Or…

“We hate having our photo taken.”

Honestly? You’re speaking my language and that makes you exactly the kind of couple I work with.

In over 15 years as an Essex documentary wedding photographer, I’ve discovered that the couples who worry most about their photographs usually end up loving them the most. Not because they’ve suddenly become confident in front of the camera, but because they’ve realised (hopefully from chatting to me!) that they don’t have to perform for it.

Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot. It’s one of the biggest days of your life, and you deserve to spend it celebrating with the people you love instead of worrying about where to put your hands or whether you’re smiling correctly.

That’s exactly why I photograph weddings the way I do.

Documentary Wedding Photography Means You Can Enjoy Your Wedding

Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing your day as it naturally unfolds.

Rather than constantly interrupting moments, I quietly observe what’s happening around me. The hugs from your grandparents. Your best mate’s hilarious dirty laugh during the speeches. The kids sliding on their knees on the dance floor.

Those are the photographs that become priceless.

Of course, I’ll still help when you need it. I’ll organise family group photographs efficiently, and we’ll take 15-20 minutes together for a handful of relaxed portraits. But these never feel stiff or awkward. Think of it more as a few minutes away together to breathe, catch up and soak it all in.

Many couples tell me this ends up being one of their favourite parts of the day.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose

This might surprise you, but I don’t expect you to. Who does?!

The couples you see throughout my website aren’t models. They’re teachers, nurses, engineers, accountants, creatives, parents and people who told me before their wedding that they were “terrible in photos.”

The secret isn’t posing.

It’s connection.

Instead of asking you to recreate moments or stand in uncomfortable positions, I’ll simply encourage you to spend time together. Walk. Talk. Laugh. Hold hands. I’ll already have a plan in my head of a few backdrops to use and if you want a fun distraction, I’ll give you some word association games to play and activities to do as you walk.

The photographs happen naturally because you’re focused on each other, not on me.

Your Wedding Day Shouldn’t Feel Like a Photoshoot

Every wedding is different.

Some photographers build the day around creating photographs. These are typically Editorial photographers. As a Documentary photographer I prefer to build the photographs around your day.

That means you’ll spend far more time with your guests than standing in front of a camera.

After all, you’ve invited your favourite people to celebrate with you. Those conversations, hugs, spontaneous dance moves and unexpected moments are what you’ll want to be fully present for and what you’ll remember years from now.

My job is to preserve those memories without taking you away from them.

Relaxed Wedding Photography at Beautiful Essex Wedding Venues

Whether you’re getting married at Blake Hall, The Barns at Lodge Farm, Houchins, Braxted Park, Vaulty Manor, Maidens Barn or another beautiful venue in Essex or further afield, my approach stays exactly the same.

Every venue offers stunning locations for photographs, but the most important ingredient is always you. I’ll use the beautiful light, the surroundings and the atmosphere to create photographs that feel authentic rather than staged.

Golden hour portraits, confetti celebrations, emotional ceremonies and packed dance floors all happen naturally when couples are free to enjoy themselves. You bring the vibe.

What Happens If We’re Really Nervous?

Then we’ll take things at your pace.

I’m naturally quite calm (and a bit introverted myself), so I understand that not everyone enjoys being the centre of attention. I’m not there to shout instructions or make you perform. Instead, I’ll quietly blend into your wedding, offering guidance only when it’s genuinely helpful.

Most couples tell me they stopped noticing the camera after the first half hour. That’s exactly what I want. Because when you forget about the camera…

That’s when the magic happens.

Wedding Photography for Introverts and Neurodiverse Couples

Not everyone dreams of being the centre of attention, and that’s completely okay.

If you’re an introvert, are neurodivergent, or simply find busy social situations a little overwhelming, your wedding day can bring a mixture of excitement and anxiety. You’re looking forward to marrying the love of your life, but perhaps not to having all eyes on you or a camera following your every move.

I understand that.

Your wedding shouldn’t feel like a performance. It shouldn’t feel like you’re expected to be “on” all day or constantly smiling for the camera. My approach is designed to take that pressure away. There is no expectation to be anyone other than yourselves.

The most beautiful photographs happen when you feel safe, comfortable and free to simply enjoy your wedding.

Looking for an Essex Documentary Wedding Photographer?

If you’re planning your wedding and looking for an Essex documentary wedding photographer who believes your wedding should be about celebrating, not performing, I’d love to hear your plans.

Whether you’re planning an intimate weekday wedding, a relaxed barn celebration or a full weekend with family and friends, my aim is always the same: to help you feel completely at ease while creating photographs that genuinely reflect how your wedding felt.

If you’re someone who says “We’re awkward in photos” or “We don’t know what to do in front of the camera,” I promise you’re not alone.

In fact, you’re exactly the couple I photograph best.
