I adore a black tie but coupled with bright pinks and oranges levelled up the wedding of Jordan & Amy and suited them down to the ground.

Amy and Jordan, both actors and performers, brought so much energy and creativity to their wedding day. Their vibrant colour palette ran throughout the florals and styling, creating a joyful contrast against the elegance of the black tie dress code.

From the moment guests arrived at The Barns at Lodge Farm, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a traditional wedding. Every detail felt intentional and reflected who they are rather than what they felt a wedding “should” look like.

As an Essex documentary wedding photographer, these are always my favourite kinds of weddings to photograph. The more personal a wedding is, the more meaningful the photographs become.

Two Ceremonies, One Incredible Celebration

One of the most unique aspects of this wedding was that the couple chose to have two ceremonies.

The first was their legal ceremony attended by close family and friends. It was intimate, emotional and allowed them to share those important legal vows surrounded by the people closest to them.

Later in the day, they held a second ceremony in front of all of their guests. This ceremony was conducted by a friend, making it deeply personal, heartfelt and full of laughter.

I often find that celebrant-led or friend-led ceremonies allow couples far more freedom to tell their story and include meaningful moments that wouldn’t necessarily be possible during a traditional legal ceremony.

For photography, it was wonderful. The reactions from guests, the laughter and the genuine emotion throughout created countless natural moments to capture.

With two professional performers at the centre of the day, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that this was one of the most entertaining weddings I’ve ever photographed.

Their friends and family were every bit as vibrant, funny and expressive as the couple themselves. There was laughter everywhere you looked.

One of my favourite moments came during the speeches when Amy and Jordan handed out their own tongue-in-cheek awards. It was such a brilliant reflection of their personalities and had guests in hysterics. Coupled with a raffle for prizes, the energy was super high!

As a documentary wedding photographer, speeches like these are a dream. While everyone naturally focuses on the person speaking, some of the best photographs happen in the audience as guests react to stories, jokes and unexpected surprises.

Making Weddings Accessible and Inclusive

One thing I particularly appreciated about this wedding was how thoughtfully it had been planned around the couple’s needs.

Amy is a wheelchair user, and The Barns at Lodge Farm is so accessible that the focus remained exactly where it should have been – on the celebration, the relationships and the incredible love shared between everyone present.

Every wedding is different. Some couples may have mobility requirements, sensory considerations, chronic health conditions, neurodivergence or other needs that influence how their day is planned. My role is never to make assumptions but to listen, adapt and ensure photography works around the couple rather than expecting the couple to work around photography.

The Barns at Lodge Farm is a venue that can work incredibly well for a wide range of requirements, and this wedding was a wonderful reminder that the best celebrations are always the ones designed around the people at the heart of them.

Arcade Games, Celebration and a Packed Dance Floor

As if the day wasn’t already unique enough, the couple also installed giant 1980s arcade games for guests to enjoy.

They were an absolute hit.

From childhood nostalgia to competitive family rivalries, the games created so many brilliant candid moments throughout the day. Guests of all ages got involved, adding yet another layer of fun to an already unforgettable wedding.

These are exactly the kinds of details that make weddings memorable. Not because they’re trendy or expected, but because they’re meaningful to the couple. Amy & Jordan, your wedding will always be right up there for me, I loved being invited into your world and being a small part of your day.
